Walking the halls, you'd think this was just another sketch by just another student. The eyes caught me, and continue to catch me. I had to know who it was. I also had to ask. I wasn't surprised, and kinda was, when I found out it was sultry Monique. Brilliantly executed, again under the guidance of Professor Richard White, I really couldn't compliment Monique enough about this particular self-portrait. I have the pleasure of having Monique sitting in one of my classes this term, and a rather casual remark I made about her baby caught me off guard. "Thanks, that's ok. His daddy is coming home soon." I just figured he was travelling. "He's in Iraq. With both my brothers." Perhaps it was the blood draining from my face that gave it away.
She grabbed my hand, as if I needed the reassurance.
"Don't worry. They're all together."

Not just another classroom, not just another day, not just another student.
I wondered.
How many more?
"Soon" wasn't soon enough.

Justin assisted in mounting the exhibition of each piece, which was 11" x 17". Note: we had NO RULERS or STRING to ensure it was professionally displayed! Tom assisted with the de-installation.

Not only did we have a small window of time in which to mount and remove this exhibit,
we had to make sure, and prove, the double-stick tape would NOT leave any marks on this custom-mixed paint!

Arnold Newman, one of the master photographers of the 20th century
who pioneered the environmental portrait,
died of a heart attack Tuesday at the age of 88.

Friends say Newman had recently suffered a stroke and was hospitalized at Mount Sinai Media Center in New York.

Newman became one of the 20th Century's foremost photographers not only because of who he shot, but how he shot them.

His subjects included the powerful and the powerfully talented. He photographed politicians, scientists, and artists, among them John F. Kennedy, Dwight D. Eisenhower, J. Robert Oppenheimer, Pablo Picasso, Igor Stravinsky, and Alfred Stieglitz. His work influenced a generation of American photographers and was the subject of many exhibitions, including a riveting show in 2000 at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. that featured 160 of his images made between 1938 and 1998.

More than six decades ago, Arnold Newman virtually invented what is now known as the environmental portrait. In his images, his subjects were carefully placed amid surroundings that commented in some way on their personality or achievements.

"I didn't just want to make a photograph with some things in the background," Newman said. "The surroundings had to add to the composition and the understanding of the person. No matter who the subject was, it had to be an interesting photograph. Just to simply do a portrait of a famous person doesn't mean a thing."

More than one critic has called Newman "the American Karsh," referring to the Canadian photographer Yousuf Karsh, who also became famous for photographing political leaders like Winston Churchill. Like Karsh, Newman's portraits were always about the subject, not about the photographer's own creative will. "A portrait by Richard Avedon or Irving Penn is really about Avedon and Penn first, and the subject second," says one critic. "With Newman, the images were immaculately composed but centered on the personality of the subject."

Arnold Newman was born in New York in 1918 and studied art at Miami University. "I wanted to be a painter, but it was the Depression," he once recalled. "In those days you did anything to put food on the table." After two years of college he took a job in a Philadelphia photo studio making 49-cent portraits for $16 a week.

Later he took his prints to the Museum of Modern Art in New York, whose curator of photography, Beaumont Newhall, directed Newman to the great photographer and gallery owner Alfred Stieglitz.

Over his long career Newman photographed for many of the major magazines of the day, including Life, Look, Fortune, Holiday, and The New Yorker.

In an online tribute, Newman is quoted as saying "Good art cannot be defined. There is only great art that creates new ideas and then there are imitations of varying degrees. There is no best way or only way. We learn from the past, in order to understand the present. The past is our foundation, the springboard into the future tradition and past ideas are important bases to begin with..."

RIP GoLive + Freehand?

An excerpt from ArsTechnica.com:

GoLive competes with the ever-popular Dreamweaver WYSIWYG HTML editor, while Freehand has gone up against the more popular Adobe Illustrator.

When the two graphics applications powerhouses posted the bans last year, there were also antitrust questions looming the background. Three months after the deal's announcement, the US Department of Justice decided to take a closer look. In particular, the DoJ was concerned about the Freehand-Illustrator and Dreamweaver-GoLive situation. Despite the fact that the elimination of competition between the two would lead to a paucity of choices for consumers, the DoJ approved the deal and it was finalized in December 2005.

Even though GoLive and Freehand will likely be making their way to The Place Where Applications Are Eternally Blessed, Adobe will continue to support the two applications for the foreseeable future. Adobe will be throwing its full weight behind the development of Illustrator and Dreamweaver, with the latter getting an interface overhaul to make it more similar to that of the other Adobe applications.

Moral of this story?
Stick with the heavy-weights: Dreamweaver and Illustrator.
That's really no answer, but when you are putting down the green,
don't see red a week later when you hear, officially, who got the axe!

The exhibit will be held in conjunction with the CT Gay & Lesbian Film Festival. The assignment was a redesign of the circulating flyer announcing the Film Fest, now in its 19th year, held June 2 - 10.

The director of the festival was so impressed with the student poster redesigns, he offered up a prime exhibit spot at Cinestudio,
located on the campus of Trinity College|Hartford.

While the basis for this article is sound, the reality is off the mark.
Internships remain a "right of passage"
for a majority of college students,
and companies, overall, equate the word "internship" with "free labor."
In the real world, it's called "pro bono", ex Latin "for (the) good,"
which is work done for a non-profit (charity) organization,
either for free or a highly-reduced rate (costs only.)

This article is reprinted for your edification,
and, as you will note, is an "op-ed" piece, which is, quite literally, an "opinion" piece placed in a newspaper, facing the "editorial" page.

Take This Internship and Shove It

MY younger sister has just arrived in New Orleans for the summer after her freshman year at Yale. She will be consuming daily snowballs, the local icy treat, to ward off the heat, volunteering to help clean up neighborhoods damaged by Hurricane Katrina and working part time, for pay, at both a literary festival and a local restaurant. Meanwhile, most of her friends from college are headed for the new standard summer experience: the unpaid internship.

Instead of starting out in the mailroom for a pittance, this generation reports for business upstairs without pay. A national survey by Vault, a career information Web site, found that 84 percent of college students in April planned to complete at least one internship before graduating. Also according to Vault, about half of all internships are unpaid.

I was an unpaid intern at a newspaper from March 2002, my senior year, until a few months after graduation. I took it for granted, as most students do, that working without pay was the best possible preparation for success; parents usually agree to subsidize their offspring's internships on this basis. But what if we're wrong?

What if the growth of unpaid internships is bad for the labor market and for individual careers?

Let's look at the risks to the lowly intern. First there are opportunity costs. Lost wages and living expenses are significant considerations for the two-thirds of students who need loans to get through college. Since many internships are done for credit and some even cost money for the privilege of placement overseas or on Capitol Hill, those students who must borrow to pay tuition are going further into debt for internships.

Second, though their duties range from the menial to quasi-professional, unpaid internships are not jobs, only simulations. And fake jobs are not the best preparation for real jobs.

Long hours on your feet waiting tables may not be particularly edifying, but they teach you that work is a routine of obligation, relieved by external reward, where you contribute value to a larger enterprise. Newspapers and business magazines are full of articles expressing exasperation about how the Millennial-generation employee supposedly expects work to be exciting immediately, wears flip-flops to the office and has no taste for dues-paying. However true this stereotype may be, the spread of the artificially fun internship might very well be adding fuel to it.

By the same token, internships promote overidentification with employers: I make sacrifices to work free, therefore I must love my work. A sociologist at the University of Washington, Gina Neff, who has studied the coping strategies of interns in communications industries, calls the phenomenon "performative passion." Perhaps this emotion helps explain why educated workers in this country are less and less likely to organize, even as full-time jobs with benefits go the way of the Pinto.

Although it's not being offered this year, the A.F.L.-C.I.O.'s Union Summer internship program, which provides a small stipend, has shaped thousands of college-educated career organizers. And yet interestingly, the percentage of young workers who hold an actual union card is less than 5 percent, compared with an overall national private-sector union rate of 12.5 percent. How are twentysomethings ever going to win back health benefits and pension plans when they learn to be grateful to work for nothing?

So an internship doesn't teach you everything you need to know about coping in today's working world. What effect does it have on the economy as a whole?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not identify interns or track the economic impact of unpaid internships. But we can do a quick-and-dirty calculation: according to Princeton Review's "Internship Bible," there were 100,000 internship positions in 2005. Let's assume that out of those, 50,000 unpaid interns are employed full time for 12 weeks each summer at an average minimum wage of $5.15 an hour. That's a nearly $124 million yearly contribution to the welfare of corporate America.

In this way, unpaid interns are like illegal immigrants. They create an oversupply of people willing to work for low wages, or in the case of interns, literally nothing. Moreover, a recent survey by Britain's National Union of Journalists found that an influx of unpaid graduates kept wages down and patched up the gaps left by job cuts.

There may be more subtle effects as well. In an information economy, productivity is based on the best people finding the jobs best suited for their talents, and interns interfere with this cultural capitalism. They fly in the face of meritocracy — you must be rich enough to work without pay to get your foot in the door. And they enhance the power of social connections over ability to match people with desirable careers. A 2004 study of business graduates at a large mid-Atlantic university found that the completion of an internship helped people find jobs faster but didn't increase their confidence that those jobs were a good fit.

With all this said, the intern track is not coming to an end any time soon. More and more colleges are requiring some form of internship for graduation. Still, if you must do an internship, research shows you will get more out of it if you find a paid one.

A 1998 survey of nearly 700 employers by the Institute on Education and the Economy at Columbia University's Teachers College found: "Compared to unpaid internships, paid placements are strongest on all measures of internship quality. The quality measures are also higher for those firms who intend to hire their interns." This shouldn't be too surprising — getting hired and getting paid are what work, in the real world, is all about.

Act like a Kid
What separates the unsuccessful from the successful?

Have you ever watched a kid come up with ideas? They're like Robin Williams after six cups of coffee: "We could do this and we could do this and we could do that and we could take this and turn it into a car and drive to the store and make an airplane out of ..."

You were a kid once, weren't you? What happened to all that marvelous free-flowing creativity?

You grew up, that's what happened!

As we "mature," we turn that humongous pipeline connecting us to the idea-generating part of our brains into a clogged garden hose — gunked up with all sorts of preconceived notions about what's good, what's bad, what's correct, what's incorrect, and what the idea or solution should (or shouldn't) look like.

That's why the most important thing you can do to stimulate the flow of ideas is to get back to your childlike innocence. And here's how to do just that.

The trick is speed and quantity. You simply push yourself to come up with so many ideas so fast that the grumpy little judge in your brain who sits in judgment of everything before it comes out hasn't got time to hold court.

So right now, pick a problem or opportunity for which you need ideas or solutions. Try to come up with at least 30 ideas in 10 minutes.

That means you're going to have to really push yourself. Don't think about whether the ideas are good or bad, right or wrong, crazy or sane. Just get them down on the page (or the screen). In fact, deliberately try to come up with some bad, wrong, or crazy ideas.

Be a kid again. Have some fun!

It may feel uncomfortable at first, but you'll soon find a momentum building that will break right through that judgmental part of your brain.

Please really do this! It's the only way you can experience your mind's unlimited potential for coming up with ideas. I promise you that you'll never look at coming up with ideas the same way.

When you're done, look over your list with your critical mind back in gear. You'll find plenty of ideas you may need to toss into the trash can. But I'll bet you find quite a few terrific ones that you never would have thought of without this amazing technique.

Congress Passes Funeral Protest Ban

Bill targets group that taunts mourners at military rites

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Demonstrators would be barred from disrupting military funerals at national cemeteries under legislation approved by Congress and sent to the White House.

The measure, passed by voice vote in the House Wednesday hours after the Senate passed an amended version, specifically targets a Kansas church group that has staged protests at military funerals around the country, claiming that the deaths were a sign of God's anger at U.S. tolerance of homosexuals.

The act "will protect the sanctity of all 122 of our national cemeteries as shrines to their gallant dead," Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tennessee, said prior to the Senate vote.

"It's a sad but necessary measure to protect what should be recognized by all reasonable people as a solemn, private and deeply sacred occasion," he said.

Under the Senate bill, approved without objection by the House with no recorded vote, the "Respect for America's Fallen Heroes Act" would bar protests within 300 feet of the entrance of a cemetery and within 150 feet of a road into the cemetery from 60 minutes before to 60 minutes after a funeral. Those violating the act would face up to a $100,000 fine and up to a year in prison.

The sponsor of the House bill, Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Michigan, said he took up the issue after attending a military funeral in his home state, where mourners were greeted by "chants and taunting and some of the most vile things I have ever heard."

"Families deserve the time to bury their American heroes with dignity and in peace," Rogers said Wednesday before the House vote.

The demonstrators are led by the Rev. Fred Phelps of Topeka, Kansas, who has previously organized protests against those who died of AIDS and gay murder victim Matthew Shepard.

In an interview when the House bill passed, Phelps said Congress was "blatantly violating the First Amendment" rights to free speech in passing the bill. He said that if the bill becomes law he will continue to demonstrate but would abide by the restrictions.

Sen. Pat Roberts, a Republican from Kansas, said the loved ones of those who die have already sacrificed for the nation and "we must allow them the right to mourn without being thrust into a political circus."

In response to the demonstrations, the Patriot Guard Riders, a motorcycle group including many veterans, has begun appearing at military funerals to pay respects to the fallen service member and protect the family from disruptions.

More than a dozen states are considering similar laws to restrict protests at nonfederal cemeteries. The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit against a new Kentucky law, saying it goes too far in limiting freedom of speech and expression.

Real Art Ways in Hartford is having a series of up to six solo exhibitions, open to emerging artists living in New York or New England. This Exhibit is called Open and "seeks to provide emerging artists in our region an exhibition and publication opportunity at a critical moment in their careers. While artists are permitted to propose the exhibition of existing work, the jury will place special emphasis on proposals that call for the creation of new work."

Real Art Ways has a very nice small gallery and a small independent theater.

It is an exciting place to have your artwork exhibited;
everyone eligible should apply.

Specific information concerning the contest directly off the website:

Artists selected will receive an exhibition of approximately six weeks duration, an exhibition publication, and will be given an opportunity to participate in an artist’s talk in conjunction with the exhibit schedule.
Projects will be published on our web site.

Emerging artists living and working in New England or New York, who are thirty years of age or younger at the time of the application postmark deadline, or artists who are no more than 3 years removed from a full-time educational program, or artists with less than 5 years of exhibition experience. Thanks for the kind words and thanks for the flyer. The flyer that you saw was a temporary one that we sent out while we are waiting for our materials for the upcoming festival. We've been having problems w. our printing companies this year. Our flyer should be out this weekend.
We'd really like to see the rest of designs that your students do. As it so happens, we have lost a volunteer who did design work for us, so we will need work done for us in the fall. Perhaps one of your students would like to do some work for us?
